Chelsea romp, Arsenal rescue a point

Chelsea were simply ruthless at The Valley. They led Charlton 4-0 by half-time on the way to a 6-0 win. Bjorn opened the scoring in the third minute, Malard got two, and Carpenter, Beever-Jones and Dragoni added the rest. After eight games Chelsea sit top on 22 points, still unbeaten and with a goal difference of +23.

Arsenal needed Russo's 85th-minute equaliser to draw 1-1 with Aston Villa in front of 23,891 at the Emirates. Grant had put Villa ahead midway through the first half. It's a very good point for a Villa side under interim boss Brian Sørensen, who took over when Natalia Arroyo was sacked in September.

Champions Manchester City had to work for a 2-1 win at London City Lionesses. Shaw scored first, Fernandez equalised, and Lauren Hemp scored the winner two minutes later.

Elsewhere:

• Birmingham City 1-4 Tottenham Hotspur: Gaupset scored twice, with Blakstad and Pelova also on the scoresheet. Herron got Birmingham's goal.
• West Ham 4-1 Liverpool: The Hammers were 3-0 up at the break. Asseyi scored twice (one a penalty), Wandeler and Codina got the others, and Endemann pulled one back.
• Brighton 2-1 Crystal Palace: Blanchard gave Palace the lead, but Hayes and Peskett scored five minutes apart after the break to turn it round for Brighton.
• Everton 0-0 Manchester United: The symmetry of the score was the best thing about this game.
